I understand Ezra's point, and I agree that trying to shove other things under the umbrella of "values" is likely to be rather counterproductive, but the fact that the word "values" has become shorthand for "hate the gay, hate other people having sex" in certain contexts doesn't give Tim Russert license to assert that Democrats are
"out of sync on cultural -- and values."
