This is starting to be rather reminiscent of the runup to the Iraq war. One by one intelligent but misguided people finally wiped the fairy dust out of their eyes and realized that going to war was actually a bad idea. I've never understood what Max describes as Kotlikoff's decades-long jihad against Social Security, but despite that I never thought of him as a hack either.
Apparently he isn't.
