Idiots

There's quite a lot of new housing development in my urban area. New housing units are being built with front garages, which is absolutely destructive to the urban streetscape. In addition, it takes away one public on-street parking. I believe, though I'm not certain, that standard zoning codes here in Philadelphia require any new housing units to be accompanied by one parking spot. Certainly the need to balance neighborhood parking needs exists, but when it simply removes a public spot and replaces it with a private spot... YEEAAARGH.

And, don't get me started on the faux-suburban pockets of development that are springing up in the middle of dense areas...


...Philly Zoning Guy stopped by to inform us that while it's only the case the new housing development with 5 or more units requires off-street parking, it has been a widely held belief by the powers that be that all new units required it. So, it isn't actually the law but people have been to a large degree behaving as if it is...
