The lack of women in media becomes extra apparent when dudes go on the teevee to talk about how some other dudes might have hurt feefees if women use contraceptives. That it isn't 100% obvious that standing up for health and medical services that women need is a political winner tells us about all the clueless dudes working in politics.
You Want My Money, You Guarantee Me A Rate Of Return
Hopefully the days when we all believed that all you had to do was hand all your money over to the smart boys in nice suits and they'd put it in their super-steroid version of "the market" and you could get richer than all the suckers are over. Big pension funds have a lot of money. People should be paying them for the privilege of playing with it, not vice versa. They should have clout to demand guaranteed rates of return. Let the smart boys in nice suits take the risks.

Lock That Internet Down
One of my recent pet peeves is about the eagerness some have to try to get various social networking sites (facebook/twitter/etc) to shut down accounts they don't like. Issues here aren't all simple, but I err on the side of "let assholes be assholes" especially in social spaces where other users are empowered to ignore those assholes. I'm not saying such sites should never bring down the hammer, and each space has its own particular issues to deal with, but I generally don't get the desire to complain to the facebook cops about the asshole on facebook. Because, you know, you're the asshole!

Do The Right Thing
Won't say they've been perfect, but the administration has been surprisingly good lately on the various fronts in the War On Female Autonomy. Shocking no one except most people who work in politics in DC, this has been good for them.

Lessons
Not exactly blind to racism in this society, but even my daily trips through the Inqy comments section usually don't teach me what the whole Trayvon Martin reaction has taught me, that large numbers of people, or at least some number of people greatly amplified on the internets and in our media, see black males as subhuman.
Rights of Way
One absurdity of Atlas Shrugged was Dagny's inherited railway business. It's basically impossible - and was, even back then - to assemble the necessary rights of way for such projects absent the government transferring land it owns to you or using eminent domain to force private property owners to do same. Also, too, highways.
Doing It Right
I don't really know anything about how/how much public money was used for the Nationals stadium, and am not defending it on those grounds, but in terms of building an urban ballpark for the purpose of actually benefiting the surrounding neighborhood, they did a pretty good job. The big reason: not much parking, and certainly not surrounding the thing with acres of surface lots.
