I Can't Believe I'm Losing To This Guy
I thought George Bush was a horrible president and I am mad that people are nostalgic for those bad old days, but I never thought that everyone who voted for him - certainly in 2000 and even in 2004 - was a horrible person. Everyone who pulled the lever for Trump... well, fuck you.
Sunday Morning
Who is going to read the twenty page legal memo put out by Dotard's legal team. Imma gonna give it a pass.

Saturday Night Thread
Dear Leader has told us today that he is above the law, any law. Perhaps because he IS the law:
L’etat, c’est Trump. For months we’ve heard President Trump’s TV lawyers, as he calls them, bandy about the argument that he — or any president, for that matter — couldn’t have obstructed justice because justice is what he says it is.
In other words, that because, they claim, a president possesses absolute power to cut short a criminal investigation, he cannot by definition be guilty of obstructing it. Or, in the famous Nixonian formulation, as Richard M. Nixon told David Frost, “Well, when the president does it, that means that it is not illegal.”
But as much as the president’s legal team foreshadowed this contention, it was nonetheless breathtaking to see it spelled out, in uncaveated black and white, in a letter from Trump’s legal team to special counsel Robert S. Mueller III.
L'etat, c'est Trump.
And apres Trump, le deluge?

Celebrity Academics
A million years ago when I was employed be a certain academic institution that will go unnamed, they had a fetish for hiring people who were clearly there to retire and play golf while earning a nice salary. Good for them! I'm not bothered by people profiting off the grift, though I was a bit puzzled by the willingness of the powers that be to starve everyone else while sending wheelbarrows of money to the retirees. Academia is complicated, but like most careers there are rules for celebrities and rules for everyone else. Still I puzzle at places like Harvard and Stanford which seem to be obsessed with trolling the universe by saying "lol losers there's nothing we can do to tarnish our reputation."
Empathy
I don't actually think I am the nicest person in the world. I think I struggle with both sympathy and empathy a bit. And being a bit of a public figure - I am no longer even internet famous but I still have to dance in public every day - forces me to confront that constantly. Also I am not the president of the United States of America.
Rhonda Hart, whose 14-year-old daughter, Kimberly Vaughan, was killed at the school, told The Associated Press that Trump repeatedly used the word ‘wacky’ to describe the shooter and the trench coat he wore. She said she told Trump, “Maybe if everyone had access to mental health care, we wouldn’t be in the situation.”
Hart, an Army veteran, said she also suggested employing veterans as sentinels in schools. She said Trump responded, “And arm them?” She replied, “No,” but said Trump “kept mentioning” arming classroom teachers. “It was like talking to a toddler,” Hart said.
Weirdos
If you get political reporters drunk enough, I bet they'd tell you that they were "tough" on Al Gore, John Kerry, and Hillary Clinton because there just isn't something right about them. They know things. They've heard things. Do you know what is in Al Gore's bathroom cabinet?
Gossip is the currency of that town, and reporters "know" lots of things they don't share in part because they don't actually know them. We've all heard things.
I bet they heard a few things about Donald Trump, too, but, well, you know.

I Hate The Ice Cream Truck
I hate that damn song (in 2018 can't they play spotify or something) and I hate when I have kids with me that it's like the crack dealer has arrived, but we live in the city so lighten up, francis.
Ronald Reagan, Gun Grabber
Everybody knows this, but of course everybody doesn't know this or pretends to not know this. Modern gun control laws came into effect when black people started scaring white Republicans in California.
Across the country, in California, when the Black Panthers asserted their right to armed self-defense by carrying rifles into the statehouse, Gov. Ronald Reagan signed the 1967 Mulford Act, banning open carry. “There’s no reason why on the street today a citizen should be carrying loaded weapons,” the Republican said.
Everybody Should Learn To Code For Murder
The dominant belief seems to be that progress requires that your self-driving car kills a few people as it learns, but I can't get over the fact that they turned off the emergency braking. This is negligent homicide, or should be.
Our vehicles are totally safe but we, uh, turned off the safety systems because they were a bummer, man.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Uber had disabled an emergency braking system in a self-driving vehicle that struck and killed a woman in Arizona in March even though the car had identified the need to apply the brakes, the National Transportation Safety Board said in a preliminary report released on Thursday.WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Uber had disabled an emergency braking system in a self-driving vehicle that struck and killed a woman in Arizona in March even though the car had identified the need to apply the brakes, the National Transportation Safety Board said in a preliminary report released on Thursday.
