Would these people ever lie?

On Monday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Fox News that it was clear a "foreign actor" had been involved.

 

Without providing evidence or giving further details, he told the "Hannity" programme: "What happened, what almost happened, what could have happened in the UK over the weekend is a very serious situation. It's one that clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor."

Speaking earlier at the Oval Office, US President Donald Trump said he was "surprised" the five men who were arrested had been released.

"We know everything about them, we would not have released them," he said, adding that the UK had worked with the US "very closely" on this.

This is very funny. As I said yesterday, the British press would likely just have "moved on" and forgoten this whole thing. Donald isn't making that easy.

The British press is very good at hyping up things - such as potential acts of terrorism - and then pretending they never happened once they don't fit the preferred storyline.

Donald's little intervention ensured interest of the US press, making that slightly harder to achieve.

FAIRFORD, England, Sept 27 (Reuters) - British police arrested five men on suspicion of explosives and terrorism offences on Sunday near an air base that has been used by the US to ​strike Iran, after a tip-off that three vans had been seen heading to the military airfield.

US President Donald Trump said the suspects had been looking to ‌do "big damage" and had been under investigation by British and US authorities.

Counterterrorism police in Britain on Monday said that five men arrested in connection with a possible terror plot at a British military base were being released on bail but remained under investigation.

Laurence Taylor, the head of Britain’s counterterrorism police, said in a brief statement to reporters that the men would be “subject to stringent conditions on their movement and contact with others.”

One isn’t supposed to say it, as "we" are good and they are bad, but the US and Israel have legitimized tactics of "war" that would have been labeled terrorism (and still will be, depending on who is doing it). I have no idea how much this is bluster and how much is concerning.

Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, says his country is open to “real diplomacy” but ready to confront any new US attacks, even if it means an “apocalyptic war”.

"Belarus has ​a lot of potash, and our farmers ​need good prices," Trump told reporters during a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr ​Zelenskiy.

Or is it some deal made on behalf of some corrupt potash importer? Who knows? Can we ever know? How does anything work anymore? 

More generally, and this may or may not be relevant for this issue: a problem of corruption is that it drives out all noncorrupt actors. You can't win by playing by the rules, so you cheat, and when everyone is cheating...
