It is true that our employer-based health insurance system is pretty bad, conceptually and in practice, but it's much better than the alternative when the alternative doesn't exist. And the McCain alternative
isn't actually an alternative, just a free market fairy system in a market which for various well understood reasons is never going to function the way that a nice competitive market should.
