In an ideal world (though not reality) it's possible the ratings agencies would have deeper knowledge and understanding of the things they were rating than everyone else. That is, after all, why they supposedly exist. But, no, they don't have any deeper understanding of the
fiscal situation of the US than anyone else. It's reasonable to ask just what their agenda is...
