I'm not surprised that Trump was incapable of even faking doing the bare minimum during All This - I'm not waiting for President New Tone to appear - but
my point is that there's a definite rally-around-our-glorious-leaders impulse in this country, and a press so desperate to bear witness to The Great Man Doing Great Things that they attempt to do it even now, that tragedy coupled with a sense that the people in charge are doing something about it would quite likely push him over the top.
