It took awhile for it to become apparent, to me at least, but we're currently reaping the benefits of the post-9/11 lionization of "first responders" that turned mere cops into Troops. Sure Real Americans would generally take the side of cops over black people, but otherwise "fuck the police" was a perfectly standard sentiment. I mean, even the good ol' boys Bo and Luke Duke spent their days evading the evil buffoonish police force in Hazzard.

It Is Wrong To Judge Anybody For Anything

I think a lot about a certain view expressed by some lawyers, which is, basically, "no lawyer can be criticized for taking on a case, no matter what the case, no matter how much they are paid, otherwise our legal system will crumble."

And, I dunno, guys, I get that even despicable [alleged] actors deserve a defense, but surely if you want extra credit and some gold stars, spending your time defending child slavery for $$$$ and doing MSNBC hits is perhaps slightly less praiseworthy than, for example. doing pro bono work for indigent clients (even the bad ones). I guess my point is, can we acknowledge that some things are more praiseworthy than others, at least?

Mini TV Review

Actually got through a recent prestige television series. I enjoyed Station Eleven, though maybe not as much as some. Felt the same way about the novel! Good, but missed me a bit, somehow. Worth watching if a show about an apocalyptic pandemic sounds like just the thing!

The likelihood of a criminal investigation and charges against Donald Trump are rising due to allegations by a House panel of a “criminal conspiracy” involving his aggressive drive to overturn the 2020 election results, coupled with a justice department (DoJ) inquiry of a “false electors” scheme Trump loyalists devised to block Joe Biden’s election.

Former federal prosecutors say evidence is mounting of criminal conduct by Trump that may yield charges against the ex- president for obstructing an official proceeding of Congress on 6 January or defrauding the US government, stemming from his weeks-long drive with top allies to thwart Biden’s election by pushing false claims of fraud.

That all laws written to possibly nab rich white people include the provision, "in order to prove guilt, we must have something along the lines of a handwritten note saying, 'I am doing this crime, I know it is a crime, in specific violation of Federal Crime Code 23.1, subsection b, and being of sound mind and body, I am doing this crime because I do love crime'" is a problem!

The Best Of All Possible Worlds

A problem is that Democrats think they can avoid "the culture war" as if most things under the culture war umbrella aren't actually the most important domestic policy issues, and not the "distractions" people in the media like to make them out to be.

Distractions are when they try to imprison you for getting needed medical care for you and your children. Vital Serious Policy Issues are when they cap my property tax deduction.

People who have terminal cable news brain should understand that politics is a story with heroes and villains, and nobody wants to listen to the nerd talking about expanded nonrefundable tax credits.

Villains are the weird perverts wanting to inspect the genitals of your kids.

As with so many other things, if you want to know what struggles parents are facing, don't listen to the punditry of Ivy League Grads who went to Choate channeling the views of right wing operatives in wealthy Virginia school districts. Maybe listen to teachers, not the people paid to demonize them.

Ageing Out Of Things

I find it mildly interesting, in a navel gazing sense, that there's a new BATMAN movie and I barely care enough to click a review to see if it's supposed to be any good. 10 years ago I would have been interested.

Or a new Star Wars TV show.

Oversaturation of such things is part of it, I guess, but also I guess I'm just getting old. I long liked that stuff, now it's all a bit meh.

At least I've never been one of those weirdos who spends time desperately trying to get that feeling that Goonies gave them when they were 11, writing rants about how They Just Don't Make Movies Like They Did In 1985 Anymore.*

Also I never liked Goonies. Maybe I was too old for it.

*This is a thing with internet movies guys who are about my age. It's weird.

Backsliding

Isn't this week's priority, but they're paving the way to reverse Obergefell. As gay rights generally move back into the realm of "contested" instead of "settled," we'll see gay and lesbian reporters pulled from covering such things due to their "bias," replaced by straight guys named Nate or Matt.

Gay people: filthy child molesters or just like "us"? Matt Gaetz and Andrew Cuomo square off on Crossfire!

A reminder that Laura Ingraham began her career as a professional conservative by outing gay students at Dartmouth to the campus generally and to their parents.
