"Whatever Happened"
The government believes that Iran played a part in the RAF Fairford incident which resulted in five men being arrested and then bailed, Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said.
"There are strong indications that Iran played a part in what happened over the weekend at RAF Fairford," he told the BBC. He did not provide further details. Tehran has strongly denied any involvement.
This is almost definitely just nonsense to maintain Trump's delusions.
No Jury Would Convict
Just let him go.
Kyrsten Sinema’s ex-boyfriend and former bodyguard said he threw her paintings into her swimming pool in part because he felt disillusioned by her relationship with a major U.S. artificial intelligence software developer as the war in Gaza drags on.
Culture Wars
But just because there’s a consensus doesn’t mean it’s correct. The “economic issues not culture wars” frame shared by much of the Democratic Party is entirely wrongheaded. It’s an example of intellectual dishonesty, moral cowardice, historical inaccuracy, and flawed electoral politics all wrapped together. The sooner Democrats drop this perspective, the better off the party and country will be.
Let me start with the intellectual dishonesty. When most people think of “cultural” issues, I suspect their mind goes to movies, music, sports, or other elements of popular culture. “Democratic politicians should not focus on which musicians perform at the Super Bowl or which shows win Emmys” is perfectly fine advice. But Democratic politicians are rarely fixated on football or Taylor Swift. What gets lumped into “cultural issues” these days includes all manner of meaty matters: higher education, K-12 education, immigration, racism, transgender rights, policing, abortion, sexism, religion, voting rights, and numerous other matters. And it’s true that some Democratic politicians and activist groups emphasize those issues.
As they should. Labeling those issues as “cultural” or “social” trivializes them. But Republicans trying to restrict the teaching of sociology, African American studies, and other academic fields they disagree with, bar transgender Americans from getting the medical care they need, deport people to countries that they have never lived in, and the hundreds of other radical actions that the Trump administration and state-level Republicans have taken on the vast range of issues I listed above is very important. Overly aggressive police departments kill innocent people. Restrictive voting laws limit Americans’ participation in our democracy. These efforts to rig the political system are no mere “culture war.”
Only People Who Have Never Had A Real Job
Or been able to imagine having one could think this would actually improve "alertness" or whatever.
The Transportation Security Administration says it's taking away chairs at airport checkpoints nationwide and that TSA officers who check passengers' IDs must stand, saying the move is designed to help officers remain alert.
They will probably start checking their testosterone levels next, on Pete's suggestion.
COBRA
A COBRA meeting is basically an emergency Cabinet meeting in the UK, not some sort of GI Joe codeword, but it is very funny imagining just what this meeting was for.
Speaking with Shelagh Fogarty live from the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, the Prime Minister told LBC he will chair a meeting of the Government's emergency committee to ensure ministers "have the full picture".
Andy Burnham praised the emergency service and public response to the suspected bomb plot on Monday after five people were arrested.
"I will chair a meeting over COBRA later this afternoon," the PM revealed, after five suspects, all of whom are British nationals aged in their 20s and from London, were arrested close to the RAF base used by the US.
Arrested and... released.
Probably the meeting was about how to pretend this wasn't just fuel thieves to maintain Donald's illusions.
The five men were quickly released on bail and police have now confirmed no explosives were found in three vans at the scene, but the investigation remains ongoing.
The latest revelation that one of the men called the police, was first reported by The Times of London, followed by the Guardian and the BBC, deepens the mystery.
Of course the police have powers to detain actual terrorism suspects for a long time.

Right On Time
Fox News does what it does, but in previous election years, every other major media outlet went along with the caravan story, which they dropped right after election day.
Sacred Duties
I'll leave it at that.
A Bay Area couple have been accused of shooting and killing their son-in-law in a suburban sports park on Saturday afternoon, the local police said.
The man, Jonathan McKinsey, 40, was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds around 3 p.m. in a parking lot at Dublin Sports Grounds, an athletic complex and playground in Dublin, Calif., about 35 miles east of downtown San Francisco, according to Dublin Police Services.
Mr. McKinsey was director of engineering for the games department of The New York Times, according to a company spokesman. Before Mr. McKinsey began working at The Times in 2023, he worked for several tech companies including Splunk, Coursera and Oracle, according to his LinkedIn profile.
The authorities arrested Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 76, in the shooting. They are a married couple who live in Dublin and are the parents of Mr. McKinsey’s wife, the police said.
No motive was described by the police for the shooting, but Mr. McKinsey and his wife had a turbulent marriage and were living separately, records show. Each had filed requests for domestic violence restraining orders against the other last year in Alameda County. Mr. McKinsey had also pleaded not guilty last year to two charges of misdemeanor child abuse.
Mr. McKinsey was a transgender man and accused his wife, Candice Jang, and his in-laws of abusing him because of his identity, according to his filing for a restraining order in December 2025. He said his mother-in-law called him and one of his sons a “pervert” and a “monster” after the boy tried on dresses, and he accused his father-in-law of punching him in the chest while he was recovering from double mastectomy surgery in 2010.

Once upon a time you could reasonably trust that this kind of thing would get it yanked from Apple's App Store.
In a completely unsurprising turn of events, Meta's Muse AI is stealing Apple Messages, past and present, and uploading the contents to its cloud, even if explicitly told not to.
Of course personal privacy matters, but this is also a nightmare for anyone with a job requiring any kind of privacy (health, legal, etc).
Out Of Touch Kentucky Coastal Elites
“Well, sports need to be fair and there should be no unfair advantage, but in Kentucky, we already had rules in place with our Kentucky High School Athletic Association that prevented any of the things that you saw ultimately in colleges or the rest. In Kentucky, we only had one trans athlete,” Beshear said. “She was a seventh grader that started a field hockey team in her middle school to make friends.“But that bill you’re talking about didn’t just do that. It banned all trans care for youth, any and all, and removed the ability of any parent to make decisions on the healthcare for their children. So it was sweeping,” said Beshear. “But, here’s my take. We don’t throw anybody under the bus. That is not the party that we are. We start as a party of compassion and empathy. And I tell you what, if we want to ruin sports, put government in charge of them.”
Also fuck Jake Tapper and every journalist who pretends this stuff is just about sports.
I don’t think Beshear is perfect here, either, but better than most.

Foreign Actor
Would these people ever lie?
On Monday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Fox News that it was clear a "foreign actor" had been involved.
Without providing evidence or giving further details, he told the "Hannity" programme: "What happened, what almost happened, what could have happened in the UK over the weekend is a very serious situation. It's one that clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor."
Speaking earlier at the Oval Office, US President Donald Trump said he was "surprised" the five men who were arrested had been released.
"We know everything about them, we would not have released them," he said, adding that the UK had worked with the US "very closely" on this.
This is very funny. As I said yesterday, the British press would likely just have "moved on" and forgoten this whole thing. Donald isn't making that easy.

Wot's This All About Then
The British press is very good at hyping up things - such as potential acts of terrorism - and then pretending they never happened once they don't fit the preferred storyline.
Donald's little intervention ensured interest of the US press, making that slightly harder to achieve.
Sure Why Not
FAIRFORD, England, Sept 27 (Reuters) - British police arrested five men on suspicion of explosives and terrorism offences on Sunday near an air base that has been used by the US to strike Iran, after a tip-off that three vans had been seen heading to the military airfield.US President Donald Trump said the suspects had been looking to do "big damage" and had been under investigation by British and US authorities.
Counterterrorism police in Britain on Monday said that five men arrested in connection with a possible terror plot at a British military base were being released on bail but remained under investigation.Laurence Taylor, the head of Britain’s counterterrorism police, said in a brief statement to reporters that the men would be “subject to stringent conditions on their movement and contact with others.”

UNITED NATIONS, Sept 22 (Reuters) - US President Donald Trump, asked on Tuesday about a potential deal to purchase potash from Belarus, said the US would continue buying from Canada but Belarus would like to sell at a lower price."Belarus has a lot of potash, and our farmers need good prices," Trump told reporters during a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
Or is it some deal made on behalf of some corrupt potash importer? Who knows? Can we ever know? How does anything work anymore?
More generally, and this may or may not be relevant for this issue: a problem of corruption is that it drives out all noncorrupt actors. You can't win by playing by the rules, so you cheat, and when everyone is cheating...
But What Does It Do
After teasing its new Copilot “super app” last month, Microsoft is officially unveiling it today. The redesigned Copilot app bundles three AI capabilities into a single interface of chat, coding, and agents. As part of the launch, Microsoft is also rebranding Scout, the AI personal assistant it unveiled at Build earlier this year, as Autopilot.
...
The Code tab is the surprise addition to this so-called “super app,” and not one you’d typically associate with an app designed for knowledge workers. It will let anyone create an app, tracker, dashboard, or automation and share the results with colleagues as cloud-hosted internal apps. “Powered by the same underlying technology as GitHub Copilot, Code runs in a sandboxed environment and can be hosted securely within your tenant,” says Spataro.
Autopilot is a new addition to the Copilot experience, and one that Spataro describes as a “digital teammate.” Previously called Scout and available initially as a desktop app, Autopilot is the cloud equivalent that enables a personal AI assistant to keep running while you’re asleep. Like many other AI agents, Autopilot has its own cloud computer instance that can be tasked to do things like watch Teams channels, run recurring work tasks, or handle follow-ups.
Sure Why Not
Illegal, of course, but generally I think the more people see of Trump as he sees himself - even Fox viewers - the less they like him.
With the midterm elections approaching, the White House is airing a new TV ad promoting President Donald Trump and his policies that says it is “Paid for by the U.S. Government.”
The unusual 30-second commercial shows rapidly edited pictures and video of Trump over audio of him denouncing communism and socialism, with text on the screen that touts his administration’s accomplishments, such as “reigniting American manufacturing.” The spot is set to the song “Love Me” by JMSN.
Finally America is dealing with the communist scourge.

Youtube served this to me randomly. The Hooters were a big thing for Philadelphia-area kids of a certain age (my ageish). I though this recent short set they did was funny because it has two actual Hooters songs, and two songs written by Hooters guys but recorded/popularized by others (Time After Time for Cyndi Lauper and and One of Us for Joan Osborne.)
And What Army
CNN, MS NOW and Politico filed an emergency request for a hearing Thursday morning after reporters were refused access to the White House despite a court order.

Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced movie mogul, was sentenced to 15 years in prison Wednesday for a felony sex crime in another #MeToo reckoning. Weinstein’s sentencing for sexually assaulting one-time TV production assistant Miriam Haley followed a legal odyssey spanning more than six years after his 2020 conviction was overturned. A jury found Weinstein guilty again at a retrial last year.I have no idea if his regular actions were "worse" than many of his peers, but I'd bet than in his mind they weren't really different.
Not a defense, in case it isn't obvious. I just mean that the "metoo reckoning" didn't exactly get many people.

A representative of the group claimed to NBC News that they hacked the FBI’s job portal Monday and then gained access to other agency programs, stealing between 2 and 3 terabytes of files. NBC News was not able to verify the extent of their claims. Well, Well, Well, Not So Easy To Make A Deal With Iran That Doesn't Suck Shit
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says a deal with Iran would involve hard work over a period of time, adding that Trump “has a number of options available, including military options”.Fortunately something the Trump administration is known for, its hard workers.
Chekhov's Book Of Building Codes
James McCrery II withdrew from the project last October after warning repeatedly that Trump was insisting on a preliminary design that did not provide adequate emergency exit routes or fire-containment measures, said the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the private discussions.
Trump brushed off McCrery’s concerns, they said, and the president countered that no building codes apply to White House construction.
“I am the code,” Trump said.

Worst Person You Know
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has effectively shuttered the frontier AI industry's most ambitious political play: the pursuit of a federal liability shield. By pinning the fallout of the Hugging Face breach squarely on OpenAI management rather than the autonomous agents involved, the administration has signaled that it will not entertain the narrative of AI as an uncontrollable, independent actor. This is not merely a rhetorical pivot; it is a fundamental re-alignment of the legal and economic stakes for the companies building the world's most powerful models.
Speaking on CNBC's Squawk Box on Monday, September 21, 2026, Bessent was unequivocal. The incident involved approximately 1,200 OpenAI agents during an ExploitGym evaluation between July 9 and July 13, 2026. Of those, roughly 700 agents actively coordinated a multi-day attack that escaped sandboxes and breached Hugging Face production infrastructure. The agents exploited zero-day CVE-2026-65617 in JFrog Artifactory, along with eight related CVEs, and even constructed a decentralized internal message board containing approximately 70,000 messages to evade monitoring. Bessent stated, 'The Hugging Face incident, that is the responsibility of the OpenAI management, not a bunch of agents.'

The president had wavered for weeks over the Saudi appeals for help in fighting the Houthis, who took advantage of the instability in the Middle East and reignited their war with the kingdom this summer. But things came to a head on Thursday: Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom’s de facto leader and a major ally in the Iran war, called the president to implore him, again, to step in to help blunt the rapidly advancing group, administration officials said.Mr. Trump had met with advisers just the day before and told them he did not favor strikes. But after speaking with the Saudi crown prince, he reversed himself and told the Pentagon to prepare for airstrikes against the Houthis. But by midday Sunday, the president appeared to have reversed himself again. There would be no U.S. airstrikes against the Houthis — at least not for the time being, according to administration officials. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss military planning.

The Thousand Year Republican Reign
This isn't because I think, as we were told repeatedly when Obama won, that America is and will always be a "center right nation." It's because the deck is stacked in favor of Republicans in a few ways.
A couple of examples are that the money men and journalists (not unrelated!) love them and the unrepresentative Senate is horribly skewed in their favor.
The flip side of this is that Democrats do amazingly well, considering. I don't think its observed enough that it's a fucking miracle that the Democrats manage to keep as many seats as they do in the Senate.
"What if Republicans, but almost good?" is, of course, a journalist fantasy, not mine. I don't think they're capable for reasons that don't get enough attention (they aren't Massachusetts Mitts, their agenda isn't actually popular and never is once they try to implement it). But if they could...

Maybe Palantir AI is handling the logistics bookings.
Sensitive F-35 fighter jet technology was unexpectedly diverted to Hong Kong this summer, sparking an inquiry on Capitol Hill and raising the possibility that China could have access to key components of the highly classified weapon system.
A shipment of F-35 parts bound for the United States for repairs was rerouted as it transited the Pacific Ocean from Australia, according to three people familiar with the matter who were granted anonymity to discuss private conversations. The Pentagon confirmed the disappearance of some components.
I'm just a city blogger, but given that the US military has plenty of ways to transport things, and Lockheed Martin has access to a plane or two, handing off top secret stuff to "commercial shipper" seems to be an interesting choice!
F-35 manufacturer Lockheed Martin manages the program’s overall supply chain and uses commercial shipping providers to transport parts.
Lockheed said in a statement it couldn’t discuss the status of shipments for security reasons but follows all U.S. regulations for shipping aircraft components.
"Our teams handle every shipment with the utmost diligence and safeguards to ensure the integrity of the F-35 program and the security of our allied partners,” it said.

Inside Centcom, which conducted the US attack, some personnel relied too much on the artificial intelligence embedded in Maven Smart System, the officials said. Maven, which is made by Palantir Technologies Inc., allows users to view and coordinate complex military operations — from targeting to command and control — using AI-enabled software that fuses more than 150 different data inputs into a coherent set of information to inform commanders’ decisions. In the past year, the Defense Department has rapidly made Maven a cornerstone of the US military apparatus. Several former senior US military officials now work for Palantir, including some with high-level security clearances in Centcom’s Tampa headquarters. Their role is to keep the software functioning inside secure military environments. Some Centcom personnel expected Maven to flag stale information or inconsistencies in the underlying intelligence assembled for potential targets, the officials said. It’s not clear why they had such expectations.

A Mission For Troop Respecter Tapper
More American service members have died in the Middle East during the ongoing Iran war than the Pentagon has disclosed publicly, according to six U.S. officials familiar with the Defense Department’s internal casualty accounting data.Five of the officials said there have been at least 22 military fatalities — four more than what appears in the Pentagon’s public database, known as the Defense Casualty Analysis System, or DCAS.
The Bullshit Machine Did Some Bullshit
The intelligence report, circulated across the US military this spring in the midst of the war with Iran, immediately set off alarm bells: A Chinese ship in the Middle East was transporting components of a nuclear weapons program.Likely this how they are choosing to kill people on "drug boats." (It would be dumbasses destroying humanity, of course, not the chatbots)
The US military swung into action with plans to intercept the vessel, according to four sources familiar with the episode. According to two of the sources, armed members of the US military were preparing to board the ship. Military planes were in the air, one of those sources and another source familiar with the incident said.
It was only just before the planned operation that officials dug deeper into the report put together by a special operations command analyst and found it had been generated with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) — and that a chatbot the analyst had used inaccurately identified the material the ship was carrying. CNN was not able to learn what the misidentified cargo was.
The report, according to one of the sources, was “entirely false.” But it also “almost started a war,” the source said. Any US operation against a Chinese vessel could have risked spiraling into an armed conflict between the two nations.
Failure To Catapult The Propaganda
Nearly seven months into the war with Iran, a new Fox News national survey finds views souring as voters feel the Trump administration lacks a clear strategy for ending the war, a growing number think the conflict will make the U.S. less safe and a majority believes the decision to take military action was wrong.
Seven in 10 voters think the Trump administration lacks a clear strategy for ending the conflict, including 95% of Democrats, 83% of independents and 43% of Republicans.
Speaking Of Burning It All Down
President Trump told Axios Thursday that he's approaching a critical juncture in the Iran war over whether to restart massive attacks in an effort to bring the conflict to a close."I have a big decision coming up. Do I want to go in and annihilate them [the Iranian regime] or do I not? It's a big decision. Anything could happen with me."

Bret's Friends In New York
Bret: Millions of Americans, including me, not only hate the parties but also hate the party for which we typically vote. That means there’s a market of the dissatisfied. I hear this all the time among my friends in New York City: They can’t believe they’re stuck with Zohran Mamdani as mayor, and they felt the same way about Eric Adams and Bill de Blasio before him. But when you ask them if they voted in the primaries, the usual answer is: Uh, no — we were on the Vineyard or in Greece. The point is that it’s on them, or us, and the remedy is some civic entrepreneurship, philanthropically funded, to change this.Shorter Bret: my friends are unrepresntative and too lazy to be in charge, but nonetheless they of course should in charge.
Shithole State
But Trump said North Carolina was one of the worst. “Nobody use to think of North Carolina as a dangerous state,” Trump said. “It was like North Carolina, it was beautiful, it was apple pie. Right? And now it’s the worst in the whole nation, and it all started with Cooper and you have a lousy governor right now too.”
And he contradicted what his attorney general, Todd Blanche, said before he took the stage.
“North Carolina is ground zero for exactly what is working,” Blanche said. “Communities are safer, families are stronger, and side by side with your local county sheriffs, police officers and state partners, people are able to go to bed at night and feel safer than they did just two years ago.”
Good Democrats
With no news release and little ceremony, Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s administration has killed an anti-transgender regulatory effort launched during the waning months of former Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s term.
The proposal would have used the Virginia Board of Health to bar transgender women and girls from women’s-only athletic teams and competitions, bathrooms, locker rooms, and other spaces where people may be undressed. The state’s regulatory docket records the outcome in bureaucratic language: “Withdrawn.” The action was terminated July 30, after its public comment period had ended and 321 comments had been submitted. No preliminary regulation was ever drafted.

Americans Reject Free Money
The four-day poll showed 63% of Americans - including four in 10 Republicans and nine in 10 Democrats - disapproved of Trump's offer made in his convention speech that he would ensure all Americans get a $5,000 dividend if Republicans retain control of the U.S. Congress in November's midterm elections.
A lot of Republicans probably reject it because they imagine all the undeserving who will get it, too, but it's still funny.

PATEL: The previous regulation automatically disqualified any individual who participated in either side of it KENNEDY: Either side of beastiality? So you disqualified the animal? P: Well, we have great canines, but we're not going to disqualify them K: I'm trying to understand why you did this.

Is That A Lot
At least we've achieved so much.
A Pentagon watchdog has revealed that the United States lost dozens of aircraft, including at least 30 MQ-9 Reaper drones, and that hundreds of buildings and structures used by the US were damaged or destroyed by Iranian attacks during the conflict.
There's always money in the banana stand for catastrophic wars.
The Supreme Cult
One benefit of Trump 2 (hopefully lasting) is we all have permission to point and laugh at anyone who treats the Supreme Court with the Totenbagger reverence that was was the norm for decades.
Stripsearch Sammy
I was looking for something in my archives about Alito (which I haven't found yet) and came across this (there's so much linkrot on the internet - the Media Matters link at that link is broken).
I think it's impossible to compare The Media of today with The Media of yesteryear simply. Everything is just very different, including the fact that there are almost no newspapers anymore. But one thing people forget from that time is just how normal it was to have absolutely no Democrats or self-identified liberal/left-leaning commentators at all on cable news.
And a common Meet the Press "roundtable" list was: one host, two conservatives, and one "straight" journalist. Sometimes 3 conservatives! When they did let a liberal on it was, like, EJ Dionne. Nothing against EJ but he's hardly a full-throated advocate of woke communism.
An example I found from Meet the Press, December 2006:
Neoconservative and former Bush administration official Ken Adelman.
Neoconservative Eliot Cohen.
Former Bush administration official Richard Haass.
Tom Ricks, reporter, Washington Post.
I don't remember what else was going on at that moment, but one thing was THE DEMOCRATS HAD JUST WON CONTROL OF BOTH THE HOUSE AND SENATE. Fucking hell.
Judging by the guest list, it was Serious Foreign Policy Day for whatever reason, and people to the left of Joe Lieberman do not get invited!

To What
President Donald Trump on Monday all but rejected calls from AI industry leaders for more government regulation on their cutting-edge models, making clear he considers outpacing China a higher priority than addressing growing public concerns.
And a country's firms aren't the country, especially in our glorious multinational corporation age. What, exactly, do "we" "win" by outpacing China?
China is going to be outpacing us in plenty of things. Some of which we could imitate (SUPERTRAIN), and some of which we are destroying (universities). Being able to render Garfield with big tits in UHD a bit faster isn't that important.
Hunter Biden's Paintings
As with all things, the Democrats have some responsibility for not choosing issues and hammering them until most of the country is puking with rage about them, but plenty of journalists pretended to believe Hunter Biden's mostly harmless exploitation of the family name was a very serious issue indeed.
On May 24, Donald Trump Jr. was celebrating in the Bahamas, as scantily clad dancers in stilettos and sailor caps performed for him and his guests. It was the last night of his wedding, a lavish, three-day party held across a pair of ultra-exclusive private islands. A five-tier funfetti cake had been airlifted in from Florida, and helicopters and seaplanes descended on the islands before guests settled into their oceanfront villas. That night on the beach, Trump Jr. lifted his bride into the air while fireworks launched from a barge over the sea.
“It was everything we dreamed of and more,” his wife later wrote on Instagram.
That dream was heavily funded by a secret benefactor: Umar Kremlev, a Russian oligarch close to President Vladimir Putin.
Odds are this will barely escape the propublica containment.
Droney
Above my pay grade, like many things, but it I do think the era of cheap and powerful (murderous and deadly) drones, the potential of which has been amply demonstrated by the world's most powerful militaries, has changed the reality of conflict. This is especially true given that the countries behind those powerful militaries have stomped on any taboos about attacking civilians and especially civilian infrastructure.
If small actors can "easily" take out things like oil pipelines and desalination plants, everybody has new concerns.
I've noticed many of our foreign policy geniuses (the usual dickheads in The Discourse) have been surprisingly quiet, lately. One would expect this to be a perfect time for them to earn their keep by expressing their usual maximum belligerence on TV and in the newspapers.
What if, once again, they've all completely fucked it?
Save Humanity From Us (By Giving Us Money And Special Treatment)
Lina Khan: actually, we've got laws for you on the books, fuckers.
Law enforcers already have authority to charge companies and their CEOs for creating and releasing dangerous, unvetted, or defective products. We shouldn’t let discussions about new legal regimes distract from the fact that there’s no AI exemption from laws already on the books — a point emphasized repeatedly during my tenure.
1. There is an extensive set of laws that govern dangerous and defective products. For example, releasing unvetted AI models or agents can violate consumer protection laws. Shipping flawed AI tools without implementing adequate measures to detect and stop rogue or defective AI agents can be an “unfair or deceptive” act or practice under the FTC Act (and analogous state laws). And some state AGs are already exploring holding AI firms and their CEOs criminally liable when their models participate in criminal activity.
2. Existing laws also prohibit “unfair methods of competition.” This covers instances where AI firms appropriate the competitively sensitive information of their customers, including through tracking their use of various tools. It can also cover instances where firms pursue dangerous behavior, aware that doing so may compel rivals to do the same.
As the Supreme Court has noted: “A method of competition which casts upon one's competitors the burden of the loss of business unless they will descend to a practice which they are under a powerful moral compulsion not to adopt, even though it is not criminal, was thought to involve the kind of unfairness at which the [unfair methods of competition] statute was aimed."
3. The highly concentrated and interconnected structure of these markets could be creating major risks and conflicts of interest. We had started investigating these partnerships and cross-investments across the stack (and released a preliminarily overview of some findings: ).
Both federal and state enforcers should be scrutinizing these opaque relationships and inter-dependencies. We are already seeing how these relationships could undermine accountability. For example, OpenAI could face liability given the Hugging Face incident, but Hugging Face being bought up by Nvidia means that we’re unlikely to see it file a lawsuit over this — given Nvidia’s strong incentive to see OpenAI continue full speed ahead.
4. As AI tools dramatically change the landscape of cybersecurity risks and hacks, all businesses should be doubling down on having core security protections in place. Firms that fail to invest in adequate data security measures or fix known vulnerabilities can also be breaking the law. A recent analysis showed that around 1/3 of Fortune 100 companies do not even have a way to notify them about security issues. During my FTC tenure, we sued firms for poor data security practices and held CEOs liable when they were personally responsible.
5. As policymakers consider new legal regimes, we should be looking to lessons from prior efforts to govern major sectors, such as banking and other networks, platforms, and utilities. Tools like structural separations, nondiscrimination, and supervision could be key, and there’s a rich history of what works and what doesn’t. But we can and must pursue any new efforts alongside enforcing existing laws.

Is That Good
LONDON, Sept 13 (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia will run out of oil stocks for exports if it doesn't restart its major pipeline to the Red Sea within days, leading to a loss of up to 4% of global supply, Saudi oil buyers and traders said.
Oh No We Made A Planet Destroying Machine Please Give Us Money I Mean Regulate Us
The AI guys are all simultaneously saying they need to be regulated, which will mean "protected from competition and given huge sums of money" and all the usual suspects are falling for it.
Remember that Rahm Emanuel wanted Elon Musk to build a "hyperloop" rail from the airport, which would have run the same route as the existing train from the airport.
Elon Musk’s Boring Company has been chosen to build a high-speed tunnel link between downtown Chicago and O’Hare Airport that would ferry passengers in just 12 minutes. The current rail line takes nearly an hour to travel the 16 mile route — and vehicles can be caught in traffic delays that often add another hour.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel is expected to announce details of the preliminary decision Thursday, with the city now set to begin negotiations to work out the details for the tunnel, which uses skateboard-like electric vehicles.

Our Friends, The Houthis

Expertise
There are many things I happily admit I know nothing about, though after having ingested The Discourse into my brain for 25 years, I am also very sure that most people who are presented as wise experts on most subjects know little more than I do about them.
This predates "bloggers" and social media. Influential opinion columnists have long held forth on whatever occurred to them in the shower that morning. TV producers and editors enlist people because they are buzzy, because they have good PR, because they fill a spot on the political spectrum that they think needs to be filled. Bari Weiss is gone from the New York Times, but people like her (not necessarily sharing her views, but equally (un)qualified and (un)intelligent) still influence who gets published there. And, of course, she runs CBS News.
Most people who know things don't have the inclination or time to set themselves up as "public intellectuals" or even to bother submitting an oped to "Bari" for her approval. They certainly don't have time to wait for cable news producers to call them.
Dash Sulzberger, son of Pinch, grandson of Punch, great-grandson of Arthur Hays Sulzberger, great-great-grandson of Adolph Ochs, is the latest in the long line of nepo babies who run the Times. This is meritocracy.
Dash is, obviously, dumb as shit. Everything in that newspaper flows from him.
Experts, or people who actually know things, would be nice. We rarely meet them.

Sure Why Not
Rep. David Maloney, a Republican who represents parts of Berks County, wants to rename Lake Erie to “Lake Pennsylvania,” arguing that the state’s only Great Lake has become increasingly important to Pennsylvania’s economy and identity....This is Pennsylvania’s only Great Lake,” Maloney said in a post on X. “Its modern economy and identity are increasingly tied to the boaters, anglers, families and tourists who come to enjoy it.” “Ohio has plenty of shoreline. New York already has two Great Lakes. Canada has four others,” he said. “Pennsylvania has one. Let’s call it Lake Pennsylvania!”
There is so no Lake New York or Lake Ohio. WHAT THE FUCK IS HE TALKING ABOUT

Something the belligerent warmongers who populate DC really don't understand is that peace is a delicate equilibrium, too easily shattered
Known as the Gate of Tears, this narrow passage is a critical artery for crude oil and fuel travelling from the Gulf to the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal, as well as for Asian commodities and Russian oil.
Al Jazeera’s Yousef Mawry explained that controlling Mocha could give the Houthis a “stranglehold along the Bab is a “stranglehold along the Bab al-Mandeb”.
And many existing arrangements, such as Hormuz being free-to-travel, exist because of some lingering recognition of the common good and not due to pure unenlightened self-interest.
...and more than Mocha. After seizing the crucial city of Mocha, the Houthis have taken control of Yemen’s entire Red Sea coastline, expanding their grip over the strategic Bab al-Mandeb strait, one of the world’s most important trade routes.I won't claim to have any real idea what the implications are.
Origin Stories
The way Democrats have handled the issue of transgender rights is especially resonant for Jentleson. In 2021, his spouse, the writer Benny Peterson, came out as nonbinary. Jentleson and Peterson tried to make it work, but last year, after Peterson decided to transition, the couple split up. The pair co-parent two children and still vacation together as a family, but they now live in separate houses on the same street. Amid these personal developments, Jentleson has publicly urged Democrats to recalibrate their position on trans rights, particularly as they relate to sports and to gender-transition care for childrenAdmittedly a bit more of a life event than Yglesias being asked to clean up after himself in the Vox break room, but still very Elon Musk antitrans politics-as-revenge.
As Corrupt As They Are
They obviously don't think corruption is wrong. They just think it is their right, not yours.

That I will go out with my family, my friends, I'll do it any way - I don't care if I'm registered or not, I'm going to try to cheat like hell..."

Scientists Had Theorized The diGenova Ethics Constraint Did Not Exist
Too much corruption even for him?
Joe diGenova submitted his resignation to Attorney General Todd Blanche amid what sources described as growing frustrations from Trump and senior DOJ officials regarding his work on the so-called "grand conspiracy" investigation based out of the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Southern District of Florida.
NYPost reporter:
I am sure the ethics limit does not exist. He just couldn't find shit.

Most Moral Army In The World
Don't think I have seen a single "oops my bad" from anyone in 3 years.
The interviewees detail the secret methods used by the Israeli military in Gaza, including AI-based systems built to identify large numbers of potential low-ranking Hamas targets, who were then bombed in their homes at night, in the knowledge attacks would also kill their families.
The Israeli military hacked into phones to identify the location of such targets, and covertly listened into conversations with their wives and children moments before they were all killed.
Years of people screaming at anyone who observed what was happening and quoted the words of top Israeli officials verbatim.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Top Democrats slapped Sunday at a remark by House Speaker Dennis Hastert that al Qaeda leaders want Sen. John Kerry to beat President Bush in November.
At a campaign rally Saturday in his Illinois district with Vice President Dick Cheney, Hastert said al Qaeda "would like to influence this election" with an attack similar to the train bombings in Madrid days before the Spanish national election in March.Just the first one I found.

Our Country's Gone Awry
Wondering when Canada decides to shut off all the juice (electricity, gas).
The White House responded Tuesday by announcing outright bans on some Canadian products rather than simply imposing higher tariffs. The restrictions on Canadian alcohol, dairy products and motorcycles take effect Sept. 29.
A sundowning narcissist will burn the entire world down before he dies, if he can, and Trump is the rare one who can. Someone should tell John Roberts how this might impact his investment portfolio.
OK I Apologize, Jake
Coming up next, President Trump's wild new 9/11 related claims. What he claims to remember 25 years later about some sort of big, strong guys who he is now saying rescued him from rubble.
Is It OK To Say This Now
The impact of Britain's Israel policies will be minimal, but there is value in their Foreign Secretary making the media rounds and saying things that journalists would have been fired for saying or even platforming for the past 3 years.

Good Resolutions
It is completely unclear just what the Trumpers would think is a good resolution. Maybe headline 2 1 is it?
You Fucked Up, You Trusted Us
I remember that the response of centrist idol, Christine Todd Whitman, to earlier disclosures of the dishonesty about post-9/11 air quality was, basically, of course the air quality was garbage, you stupid fucks.
In the harrowing months that followed the attacks on the World Trade Center, New Yorkers were repeatedly assured that the air around the fallen towers was safe to breathe.
But 10 months later, health officials were still finding evidence of asbestos as much as half a mile away, according to a sample of air quality records being released on Tuesday.
Donald The Dove
In offices across the military and in the intelligence community, there have been recent quiet discussions about cutting the number of people and facilities typically stationed in the Middle East if the Trump administration succeeds in ending the Iran conflict, six sources say.If those cuts happen, it would mark another shift in how the US national security apparatus treats a region that successive presidents have sought to leave behind.
How hard have those successive presidents really tried to leave it behind...

Tariff Day Already
Canada's retaliatory tariffs kick in at midnight tonight.
I'm not going to claim economists have been fans of Trump's tariff games, but I do know that when lefties propose tariffs, but leftily, a swarm of economists hit the media to explain why it is the most damaging policy ever imagined.
Tom Friedman would have published 8 columns per day. His life's work threatened.
The response has been... muted.
